The Book That Changed My Life

'Eating Animals' explores the philosophy of(you guessed it) eating animals and the cruelty involved in factory farming. A lot of different aspects of animals raised as food are discussed,including why the author wrote the book,the environmental effects of eating meat,and so on. For this book,Foer studied for years what goes on behind the scenes in factory farms,getting first-hand accounts from factory and undercover workers. One thing I like about the book is that the author gives examples from both "sides" of the animal welfare debate in the form of letters from different people. Some people say why they believe eating meat is good and healthy,perfectly moral and acceptable. While others explained why they believed eating animals was wrong,unethical,cruel and destroying the planet. The author gives his thoughts on both sides,not really seemingly picking a side,but asking questions,giving facts and letting the reader decide what is better for them. Reading this book,I didn't feel like I was forced to make a decision for either side,but was given facts,opinions from different people and things to think about. I've been exposed to what cruelty and abuse goes on in factory farms:cramped cages in which the animals can hardly move,beatings from the workers,slaughter while being consious,ect,ect. I've always loved animals and I do not want to support this cruelty by buying meat. 'Eating Animals' really got me thinking about taking a stand and going vegetarian,so after finishing this book I finally made my decision in favor of the animals. The book is written well,gives good facts and arguments,and is pretty powerful in the way it gets one to think about changing one's lifestyle and diet for the sake of health,the environment,and of course,the animals involved. Everyone should read this book.
